Rain cascaded from the dark night sky.
The wind blew ceaselessly, infiltrating every place of shelter.
The houses were dark and silent, their occupants asleep and warm in their quilt-covered beds.
In their burrows, far under the ground, the rabbits and their brood were safe and warm, and the squirrel too was at least dry and sheltered in his drey, but high in their nest in the flimsy tree the magpie was buffeted and sodden in spite of its roof-covering,for no amount of skillful intertwining could defeat the incessant rain and the drip, drip, drip of the long cold drops.

His job was to protect their youngsters from the elements and he accepted his lot in life. His mate stood nearby to allow him some respite should the rain stop, or at least lessen, but it was not to be, and all night long they both stood their punishing vigil.

At long last the first streaks of dawn lanced through the dark sky, and with it came a lessening of the wind and a cessation of the rain.
The male gladly handed over his duties to his mate and stretched and shook his sodden wings.
She settled on the hatch lings and comforted them.

Now his new role came to the fore.
He was now the hunter and food-finder for his family.
He needed to find food for his family, and he needed to find it quickly, for the youngsters were ravenous, not having eaten for several hours.
He and his mate could wait, but the youngsters needed food now.

He hopped across the wet grass and quickly found several juicy worms.
Although he himself was hungry his youngsters were more important than his hunger pangs.
He flew quickly to the nest and passed the worms to his mate.
She in turn fed the hungry youngsters.
Several times he repeated his journey, until satisfied that they were now well fed, before he addressed his own hunger.
He quickly devoured his fill before returning to the nest to once more to keep his chicks warm and dry.
His mate flew off to satiate her hunger.

Just another day in the life of the magpie.

Kitos.

Come on folks! Start composing. Don't leave it all to poor old Kitos.
