What are the difference between safe and secure?

What is the difference between these two words?

In this sentence, I fear there is no difference at all: it rather seems as though its author were someone who likes to stick on meaningless words in order to look more distinguished; security doesn't appear to add anything that safety didn't have yet.

In some contexts, however, there may be a difference. You could look up both words in an online dictionary; secure is mostly used for situations where something is locked away; safe for situation where something is protected from harm. But then we have a safe, which is a locked container; and on the other hand a security guard, who will often protect against robbers and such.
