2.Before the automobile, the horse [add hyphen] drawn carriage was the primary mean means of private transportation.

3.During the seventeenth century the [remove "the"] most colonists were primarily concerned with economics and defense.

4.Most [add "of"] William Faulkner’s novels deal with the universal problems of evil as represented by family disintegration and degeneration

5.The water in Lake Superior is mostly totally pure, with only localized areas of pollution. [You may be right that "mostly" is wrong; then again, if you remove it, you get "totally pure", even though the lake is not. Instead, you could remove "totally", so that you get "mostly pure", which seems to be right. But "mostly totally pure" is not entirely impossible, though it is not pretty. It could also be said that "pure" is not the best choice here to describe unpolluted water: perhaps "clean" would be better. Another candidate is "localized areas", which I'd call a tautology: an area of a lake is of course localized, no need to add the superfluous adjective. I don't like this whole sentence at all: it is badly written. If I had to make a choice, I'd erase "totally".]
