Will vs would, do vs does, for vs to #1 (permalink) Tue Oct 13, 2009 4:54 am   Will vs would, do vs does, for vs to

hi everyone!

I have some questions with will vs would, do vs does & for vs to.

I would greatly appreciate the help!

1. Networking is an essential skill to every working women. Can someone explain to me why it is FOR instead of To.

2. Gender discrimination and stereotype is derived from the notion that women does not belong in business. Can someone explain to me why it is DO instead of DOES.

3. There are many leading companies that would only do business with certified business owners. Can someone explain to me why it is WILL instead of WOULD?

THANKS!

1. I would call 'to' a wrong choice for a preposition.
2. Error
3. A wrong choice, unless context suggests that leading companies have not yet had an opportunity to do so.

1. It is "for" because it is a skill that every... woman must have or acquire. Would it make more sense if that way if you said, Networking is an essential skill for every working woman to build. (Note: if you use "every," you want the singular "woman." The skill "to" every woman... just doesn't have a meaning - it's like the sentence is trying to pass that skill "to" the woman.

2. Gender discrimination and stereotype is derived from the notion that women does not belong in business. This is singular (woman) vs plural (women). You could say 'This woman does not belong in business' OR 'These women do not belong in business.' He (singular) does not belong... They (plural) do not belong...

3. There are many leading companies that would only do business with certified business owners.
The "will" is firmer it's stating that it's true right now and they will do only this one thing.
The "would" is more conditional - like something that they would do in the future or they would do - if they had their preference. There is more "wiggle room" with the would. I would not say that it's incorrect, but the emaning is slightly different.

THANKS!
