Zero, singular or plural? #1 (permalink) Wed Oct 14, 2009 20:07 pm   Zero, singular or plural?

Water freezes at zero degrees centigrade and boils at 100 degrees centigrade.

Is ”ZERO" plural? How come we need to put "-s" here? Thanks!

zero is neither singular nor plural logically but, English probably treats zero as plural since grammar gives us only two choices.

1) singular -> +1/-1
2) plural -> more than 1 to both (+)direction and (-) direction

zero is not probably the word "one"

we normally say "there are no spoons on the table", probably because zero is thought of as a number , that is not one.

Yes, zero is plural: it should be "zero degrees". As Nerry said, there is no good reason why it is so, but grammar is not always rational.
