Hi,

I'm not quite sure from which perspective or country you are speaking. Over the last 50 years in the UK there has been a considerable drop in official censorship on most of the media. This has generally been regarded as progress but there is a new kind of what you might call insidious censorship raising its head, which has caused writers, producers and speakers metaphorically to keep looking over their shoulders for fear they are transgressing somehow. This has become known as political correctness or PC for short. It has a puritanical streak about it and sometimes reaches the heights of absurdity. Perhaps the population at large should be trusted to exercise self censorship so that excesses are avoided. Or am I being too optimistic?

Hi Tabo,

Well, you bring up an interesting conversation about censorship. Living in America, censorship in any forum is frowned upon, but folks must use discretion. For example, television shows with mature or adult content should not be broadcast during hours when children are watching. Swearing is not allowed in any programming. And I don't just mean X-rated programming. Good judgment should always be used regarding any topic.

Take care,

Tom

Good morning Tabo. As Tom says, an interesting subject, which is easy to answer (in my opinion that is.)

Would you object to the things that you are being shown, or asked to listen to, being performed in your own home?

There is a great need for firmer censorship in most countries. There has been a marked deterioration in what the public is being shown, and being asked to accept as "the norm."

It isn't, and never has been!. We need a return of respect for each other and those around us.

Under stress situations people so readily resort to swearing, as if this reinforces their point of view. It merely illustrates that they are becoming conditioned to this verbal reaction to stress, or to anyone who dares to object to their actions.

What people do and say in their own homes is their own business, and a subject of their own conscience, but what they do and say in public is another matter.

Kitos.

Hi Littledaniel,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. So you live in Canada now - what brought you there? Work?

I know I mentioned last time, but you really are doing a great job with speaking and writing English. You said that sometimes you still have a hard time with television shows and understanding certain words. Well, I think that's very normal. Just keep doing what you're doing. Watch as much television as you can.

If you have the time, it may also help to write your message in the forum, like I am doing here. It just gives you more practice.
