Question about present perfect tense. #1 (permalink) Thu Oct 15, 2009 20:33 pm   Question about present perfect tense.

EnglishClub Rule:
1. Present perfect tense for experience
2. Present perfect tense for change
3. Present perfect tense for continuing situation

Help me out guys, I have a confusion about first and third rule right now. I know it's easy to distinguish if a sentence is on rule one just by basing on the context, like "I have seen that movie.". But what if someone just tells you "I have worked at Walmart for 5 years. ". It's quite hard to tell right, if he meant he is working at Walmart for 5 years until now, or he was just working on Walmart before for 5 years and not anymore now.

What do you guys think? xD

To me it means that you still work at Walmart, or at least that you have worked there right up until this moment (3) - not that you worked there and stopped working at an unspecified time in the past some time ago (1). Perhaps it is the "for x years" that does it.

Question about present perfect tense. #3 (permalink) Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:34 am   Question about present perfect tense.

"I have worked at Walmart for 5 years. " ---- I'm just guessing but maybe that "just now rule" for 'for' could also mean 'recently'? And sometimes, 'recently' could change from 5 mins ago to a month ago depending on the speaker's viewpoint.

Like:
- "Our semester has just started." (he began 15 days ago)
- "I have taught it for years." (Like maybe he's been teaching for more than 10 years, and considers stopping it for a while for about a month he considers 'recently')

Still I'm not sure. Is this a correct view to approach these matter? xD Or just use past tense on these and be done with it?
