On the ground means simply that something is resting on the ground/earth. |

Well, yes, you can use anything you like figuratively; but it can be difficult to successfully create a new metaphor in a foreign language, because you will not know all the connotations of the word or expression you are using, which may disturb the effect.
What exactly are you thinking of? There are many existing expressions with "ground" used figuratively, such as standing "with both feet on the ground", which means behaving or thinking "in a very realistic manner". |

| Perhaps you are thinking of the expression a person with "experience in the field" or "field experience": someone who has practical experience from working in a practical environment. Whether or not he also has theoretical knowledge from books or such is a different matter. |

| I was told that "on the ground" could also mean "a duel is taking place"; maybe too old to fit it here. |
