"Different from" vs "different than"? #1 (permalink) Fri Oct 16, 2009 19:18 pm   "Different from" vs "different than"?

Hello all,

I have been enjoying a wonderful educational website that donates rice to underdeveloped countries.

http://www.freerice.com/index.php. You can test your knowledge on different subjects, i chose english grammar:)

Anyhoooo..
I keep missing obviously a fine point. What is the difference between:

Her story is different from mine.

Her story is different than mine.

I tried to look up a rule on the internet and couldn't find anything. Then I remembered the wonderful grammarians and grammarians in training. So please enlighten me;))
Thanks in advance

Traditionally, only "from" is right, "different than" being considered a mix-up of "different from" and "other than"; but nowadays some grammarians do not disapprove of "than" anymore, especially in America.

Why is it 'especially in America', Cerberus? I don't get it at all, bro.

I meant to say that "different than" is approved of more in America than in England. I don't know why; for that you'd need to know the historical development of this collocation.
