Are these sentences correct:

1-He thanked the gods for being safe. (He is safe.)
2-He thanked the gods for helping him. (The gods helped him.)

3-He was grateful to the gods for being safe. (He is safe.)
4-He was grateful to the gods for helping him. (The gods helped him.)

Sentences 1, 2 and 4 are correct, sentence 3 is ambiguous.
