The difference between 'these' and 'those' #1 (permalink) Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:18 am   The difference between 'these' and 'those'

Hi all
Here is one question that puzzled me a lot---If you are one of these winning individuals, come and share the growth with us.
I am wonder wether the word "these" should be replaced by "those"?

Thanks in advance for any help.

.
We don't have enough context to see it here, but these refers to winning individuals mentioned nearby in the text. It is good (and standard) style to use the proximal demonstratives (this, these) in writing when referring to recently-mentioned referents, even though in many cases the distal demonstratives (that, those) will serve as well, grammatically speaking.
