Kevin Smith was enjoying his pint of beer as he sat on the bench at the Annual Sea Scouts fair.
It was a glorious day. The sun blazed down from a clear blue sky, and people there were having a great time.
They had been given all manner of displays and demonstrations.
The organizers had really done a great job of this years fair.
"The best one in recent years", everyone there agreed on that.

Kevin had really only attended the fair to watch his mate's Arthur and Stuart demonstrate their newly built submersible craft.
It was in the process of being brought to the market, and both men were immensely proud of their work.

The craft came alongside the quay and both Stuart and Arthur waved at Kevin.
The three were lifelong friends since their schooldays.

After a short explanation to the people standing on the quay, Arthur and Stuart entered the submersible and closed the watertight hatch cover.

The tiny craft slowly disappeared under the murky waters of the dock.
Everyone was agog with excitement at first, but after a few minutes people were beginning to lose interest, and the crowd moved on to more interesting displays.

Kevin sat on the edge of the quay and peered into the murky water below imagining just what it was like in that small two-man craft.
Just as he was about to light a cigarette the water below his feet erupted and Stuarts head appeared. He was gasping for air.

"Kevin, help! Arthur is trapped down there. The cabin is full of water".

Kevin rose to his feet, kicked off his shoes and dived into the dock.
He saw the small craft and he was surprised that the hatch was still closed.
He grasped the handle and levered the hatch open.

He saw Arthur just as he entered the interior and grabbing him by the shoulders he pulled him through the hatch and kicked their way to the surface.
As he surfaced he saw that two other men were in the water waiting to help him.
A huge crowd had been attracted by the commotion, and many willing hands lifted Arthur from the water.

Kevin dragged himself onto the quay, and to the astonishment of the onlookers he began to cry.

"Are you all-right Mate,?" a friendly voice enquired.

Between sobs Kevin replied, "Yes,I am, but Stuart is still down there. he's strapped in his seat and he's dead".

a bit creepy ...

I kind of like the way you spell 'organisers' instead of 'organizer' Laughing

(BTW, "watch his mate's Arthur and Stuart demonstrate", i suppose the apostrophe after 'mate' is not necessary?)

Good morning Rynssen, yes a little creepy, but it is clearly headed," A ghostly tale".

Organizer is the widely accepted definition of a person who organises, but I have used this manner of spelling this word for years, and it's difficult to change the habit of a lifetime when typing quickly.
Even when proof-reading I accepted the spelling without doubts.

A teacher, I am not.

Good afternoon Kitos. It's already afternoon in my place. Smile

I love this story. It's difficult to maintain a lifelong friendship, not to mention having friends worth dying for. And I found that it hurt more when we were betrayed by friends than lovers.
