Should Universities provide scholarships to students in need or not?
The topic under discussion is whether the universities should provide scholarships to talented students in the form of aid or not.In my opinion universities should provide the necessary aid for students. This is because the main objective of universities (should be) to make (higher) education accessible to all people, (not only those who can afford it).
First reason I think universities should provide scholarships is the fees charged by (them).
In the recent years the fees collected by universities have sky rocketed. It is almost (impossible) for the common middle class people to study (at) their own (expense).
For example, in the recent past IIM's, one of the premier institutes for business administration, has increased fees (by a) staggering 100%. Eventually (ordinary) people have to source money from other channels, like banks and universities. Universities should consider all (of these) factors while augmenting fees. Alternatively, when they increase fees, at least some grants should be provided to (poorer) top class students (to exhibit some balance in the system).
Second reason; I think (why) universities should provide grants, is the quality of students. Good quality students often don't have enough money for studying in universities. So universities should think of (the longer) term benefits, rather than concentrating on collecting fees from students.
It is in the best interests of everyone if the universities give grant to good students, rather than admitting a poor quality student, (who can afford their fees). Good grants and good quality in education will attract (the) attention of talented students. Universities should note the fact that (the) quality of students and (the) college's reputation are directly proportional.
Finally, I think universities should consider their objectives as the provider of education. Universities should make sure that the grants are (awarded) to appropriate candidates. Education is (the) one thing which grows by distributing. It should not be bought, rather it should be taught.
