Similarity of buildings throughout the world... #1 (permalink) Sun Oct 25, 2009 4:47 am   Similarity of buildings throughout the world...

In the past, building often reflected the culture of a society but today all modern buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming more and more similar.

What do you think is the reason for this, and is it a good or bad thing?

Response:

Buildings play an extremely important role for any civilization and they also indicate the culture of any society. In the past, buildings are typical for each country but today there is a reality that all buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming more and more similar.

In my opinion, this real situation occurs because of two reasons. Those are the improvement in construction and the influence of globalization. For the first reason, nowadays, buildings are built following the common trend that is becoming higher, stronger and husbanding more materials. They are mainly built by some chief material such as steel, concretes and bricks therefore the construction appear to be formulas that are applied by all the architects. For the second reason, the globalization make the world become more and more similar. Many buildings of countries were designed by foreign architects so the impacts of foreign culture are obviously. Furthermore, architects themselves learn from another colleagues so the buildings they design will have some similarities.

For the answer of the question that the similarities of buildings in other cities throughout the world is a good or bad thing, as far as I am concerned, it is not an alarming issue and it seems to be inevitable reality and we have to accept. However, buildings looking alike do not mean the cities will not own special cultural characteristics. Many cities focus on constructing only a few architectures, which are unique and typical for these cities. For example, we can easily recognize Paris by Eiffel towel, New York by statue of liberty and Sidney by Opera House. This is a reasonable approach and I do agree with this initiative.

In general, the similarity of buildings is a trend of modern’s society. Although it is inevitable reality but there are many solution to create the cultural differences for each society.
