(B) isn't even a real verb, as 'drive' is an irregular verb, whose correct past tense is 'drove'. Otherwise, I agree the best root verb here is 'drive'.

(A) doesn't really make sense, because 'urged' has a sense of positive encouragement, counter to the negative hostility of the parents attitude.

(D) would be my next choice, except for the fact that we can't use the construction of 'made him to leave', so it's an invalid choice with this construction.

That leaves us with (C), which can work. However, I'd only choose it in this sentence because (B) is invalid, and (D) won't work with the construction as written.

Sounds like the question itself isn't written as well as it could be.

Yes, you should. C is the answer. Answer keys easily go wrong in textbooks, it seems.
