Hello Boris,

I think sticking notes around the house is a great way to memorize words. What might also be a good idea is to pick some words (about three, but no more than five) every morning on a daily basis, and use them until you go to bed. Form as many sentences with the words as well as their meaning, think of occasions when you need to use them. etc. Do that with a friend (that's the most fun) while you go downtown, shopping, do chores or whatever else you need or want to do.

Another great way to learn words is a game called "exquisite corpse". It has its roots in the French surrealist era. Get a few friends together (the more people, the more interesting the outcome will be), find a piece of paper and a pen. In your case, I would choose a word and tell everyone to construct sentences with that word or its meaning. Write the first sentence, fold the paper so that your sentence is hidden from view, and pass it to the next person. He or she will do the same, fold it, and pass it to the next person. Do that until the paper finished the round. Go as many rounds as you like. Then unfold the paper and read the text aloud. You will see, it will be a very surrealistic poem! And no, you don't have to be a poet to play this game.

I used to play these two games in America and I always thought they helped me a great deal.

Hey Andy,

Thanks for message. I completely agree with you that studying a subject in not native language has to be difficult. Actually I am also thinking about economics and its base is mathematics. So if I go abroad it would be a great challenge to study it in English. I wish all the best to your studies and I am sure you are doing great;-)

Take care,
Greta

Hey All,

I think this is the fun activity to record a voice message daily for 20mins. As this is my first recording so I seriously need comments on my accent and pronunciation.
If I talk about my today's activity then I will prepare for the TOEFL exam which is on 16 Jan 10. I will write a essay on whatever topic and will post it in this forum. I also need some practice on reading comprehensions and in listening section.
So that's all for today. I will talk to all tomorrow.

Bye and have a great day!

Hi, Greta,
You are doing quite well on English. I think you will do even better in the future. Especially, when you are among the native English speakers.
I like economics and finance as well. Since they are both related to the money making. Everyone concerns it. I would like to discuss with you about any mathematical issues, if any change occurs.

Today, I would like to say something about my country.
China, the People’s Republic of China, is a socialism country with its own characteristics. It is one of the developing countries.
China lies in the east of Asia. It has a vast territory and a number of neighboring countries. It covers an area of over 9,600,000 square kilometers, only next to Russia and Canada. China's capital is Beijing, which is located in the North China.
The People’s Republic of China is one of the largest countries in the world. Now it has a population of more than 1.3 billion, making up one fifth of the world population.
Anyway, I love my country. Hope friends all over the world could come to visit China. She will never let you down.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Great to hear your commentary about China. The statistics you have given are very impressive. A population of 1.3 billion is difficult to imagine. I think if we had that number of people, my small island would probably sink! The population of the UK is around 61 million. What I like about your message is that you are obviously proud of your country and that is the most important thing. So often people tend to knock their own country and that does nobody any good.

Hello Tom
How are you today? I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for your attention and favor.
today I want to say something about myself:
I have two part-time jobs now, 1- I work in a company as an electrical engineer 3 days a week at mornings and 2- I teach music in a music institute as a music teacher at the same days' afternoon.
Unfortunately I don't have any access to a good English teacher in the city which I live in.
In fact I had seen many movies before this 8 months, therefore I had a background for learning. Meanwhile whereas I've fallen in love with English, I had a strong enthusiasm and assiduity. For instance I always listen to the American native speaker's speech instead of music in my car, also I burn the midnight oil and most of the time I study and practice English about 5 to 6 hours a day. Nevertheless I have not a good fluency because there isn't any opportunity for me to speak with someone. If I'm fluent in my recordings, it is because of that I firstly write the context then read and record it.
So I hope that I could find a solution for my fluency weakness.

Thank you again Tom

I look forward to hearing from you

Alan thank you very much for the correction I haven't seen it.Making stupid mistakes is
"the cherry of the cake"(I'm not absolutely sure if this is the collocation but I've read something like this on Wednesday) for me.However I checked the word "mourning".

Claudia I played such a game when I was at school our teacher had made it.Everytime was funny when I saw the made text.Another game was when he writes 5 letters and divides the class to groups. The group which construct more word win the competition.Your game was obviously far more interesting than that.
Today at the university I was a little bit embarrassed because of the level of my listening. In the english class we make many listenings but today was black day for me.I didn't manage with today's exercise but it doesn't make me give up.

I really need to improve my speaking skills but I can't really do this without feedback.
Is there a place on this forum where I can record messages and someone gives feedback on how good (or how awfully bad) my pronunciation is (British English)?

Anyways I am pretty much excited about this message recording activity. This is becoming a part of my routine and I love it. My today's activity would be pretty much same as yesterday. That's correct!!! I will prepare for my toefl exam, will write an essay. I am trying to improve my verbal and written communication skill and this community is doing an awesome job to help people like me. Thanks to this community and people associated with it.
Bye for now.

Hi Tuwichi,

You told that you are from India but you mentioned like staying in california currently.Could you please share us how you have been there(I mean you have gone for the test or staying with your parents). And another thing, would you like to share what are the procedures you are following to improve your written communication.

Hi tom, alan, torsten and all native speakers,

See here all the voice messages recorded are the reading of the written text. This will enhance reading skill more, rather than speaking skills. I have an idea that we can arrange a conference which will occur once in a week(most probably on weekends) and will be consisting a little group of people of this 20 seconders and we can speak to each other.
Though it is not a cake walk but I think we can make it if we get your support on this senario.

I am looking forward to hear, if anybody has any better idea ,which we can implement.

thanks to all,
Ranjan
