Hi, everyone,
It has been the season for on-campus recruitment. The enterprises are welcomed by universities to provide college students with possible ideal jobs. Today, I went to have a look at what exactly the recruitment is like. The interviews between students and enterprises were held in the gym. There was not so many people when I arrived there in the afternoon. But I was told a lot more students had left before my arrival. The situation there was a little funny in my opinion. There were more than fifty positions presenting different enterprises. Most were just ignored by our students, while in front of several well-known brands were standing long lines. And you may have guessed, the companies I was interested were behind the long lines. So, I left the gym without any enquiry or talk. I think if I really need a job I would have been in one of the lines.

Hi Torsten, Alan, Bill, Claudia and everybody of this 20'club, I often listen to your voice messages and really appreciate your ideas. Now I decided to join you here. I believe this will help me become day by day more self-confident in speaking English. I started to study English when I was at high school in Vietnam. At that time, however, I mostly concentrated on learning scientific subjects rather than languages. Now that I'm living in Italy, my Italian language is far better than my English since I speak it everyday. I see now that I really need to improve my speaking and listening skills. I know you will help me. Thanks in advance ! Huong. |

Hi Huong,
Which part of Italy are you living in at the moment? We'll certainly help you as much as we can and suggest that you continue to post messages on what your daily life is like. Can I ask why you are in Italy and what you are doing there?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Alan,
I'm living in the outskirt of Milan, near Linate Airport. You can say I'm living in the sticks, right ? :) It's better here than central Milan since there are huge parks and fields around. I love the green and can hardly live without it.
I came to Italy some years ago after winning a scholarship for a post-graduate course. I wanted to study further, for example doing a master or PhD but I wasn't allowed to compete for another scholarship after having won one...(I never understand why !) There were 2 options for me to choose from: 1st) is to go back to Vietnam 2nd) is to solve all bureaucratic problems and work here. I chose the 2nd since it was more challenging.
Till now I've been doing several different jobs in commercial area and once also in engineering field. At the moment the crisis situation in Italy is bery bad and I'm actually working only part-time. Tomorrow I'll have to go to the Police Headquarter, queue up and wait hours and hours for the renewal of my permit of stay. Don't know if I should tell you about the result...The bureaucracy here is really a big migraine.
In any case I'll come back and talk with you, thanks for listening !
Bye for now, Huong. |

Hello and welcome Huong!
Wow, I think it is great that you speak Italian. You speak English real well, but you speak Italian even better? I really admire people who speak more than two languages.
I suppose the bureaucracy (that's how I pronounce it) is a nightmare in just about every country. Don't know if that's of any consolation to you. There are documents for just about everything! I sympathize with you and wish you the best of luck!

Hi everyone!
I didn't get the chance to sign on yesterday, so the news I'm bringing you today is actually a day late. Huh!
Anyway, I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but yesterday the White Ship sank 889 years ago! What's the White Ship? you may ask. Well, it was a great 12th century vessel that was supposed to transport a lot of important English nobles from France to England, such as the only legitimate son of King Henry I of England! It was a state-of-the-art ship at the time, and nowadays historians refer to it as "The Titanic of the Middle Ages". The nobles and the crew had a merry time drinking, and this may have contributed to the accident. They set off in the dark and scraped a rock! Sounds familiar (only with an ice-berg) doesn't it? Only a butcher boy survived, who then went to Henry to bring him the devastating news. Stephen of Blois had gone off board shortly before the White Ship left port. Lucky him! He then warred with Matilda and usurped the English throne. His reign came to be known in England as "The Anarchy". I think the sinking of the White Ship was an even more dramatic event than that of the Titanic, because it changed the history of a whole country!
Thought I'd share just a bit of geek stuff today.

Thank you Claudia for your support ! I just try to think less about it because, let me say, bureaucracy drives me crazy :) I like the story you wrote about the White Ship. It's interesting to know. And you have a very rich vocabulary indeed !
Have a nice evening and see you soon.

Tomorrow I have to give my last three lessons of English this year (2009). I am a bit nervous but I have prepared it quite well. For me it's really the final countdown now. |

Hi everyone It might sounds weird but I haven't watched any musicals since I was five years old.My mother pushed me into watching one I don't know why. Today I received my test which I had made before a month and my grades are 4.5/6 for vocabulary , 6/6 for grammar , 4.5/6 for listening and 5.5/6 for writing. We didn't make a reading. I have to admit reluctantly that my listening and writing in the test are overrated but the vocabulary is underrated.Maybe my teacher gives me some incentives, I didn't dare to ask. Anyway, today in class we made speaking discussion about Albert Einstein. The point of the topic was if he were a good man and his personal life.He wasn't a particularly good student but outstanding in mathematics and physics. He didn't like the exams nor to tell him somebody what to do.He worked in school where he taught mathematics and physics because in both he was good.In addition I said that he is considered to be the person of the last thousand years and had 160 point IQ according to Roiters. |
