I am a Professor at the Finance School at Renmin University, and I recommend C G for admission to your masters program.
I got to know C G in 2007. He was the president of the University's roller-skating society, and was responsible for teaching children how to roller-skate. My daughter was one of his students. Occasionally I watched them learning and practicing, and C G's passion and dedication to the children was obvious. Later on, I heard that he was studying in my school.
Once, he invited my daughter and me to an event that he had organized for the roller-skaters and their parents. It is not easy to organize an event in which over 180 athletes, from 38 different universities, participate. And, although there were many challenges to organizing the event, C G did it very well. For example, since the event lasted for two days, C G had to arrange accommodation for all these people.
C G took my taxation course. He had perfect attendance, which was striking among the 32 students in the class. In addition, his paper impressed me for its breadth of thought, and its analysis of issues from a wide variety of angles. He managed to judge whether the overall level of taxation in China was too high, using data from money and capital markets. These statistics were not easy to obtain and gather, and even more importantly, few of my other students even thought of these factors, never mind searched for the real-world data.
During the debate of this topic, C G proposed - with abundant evidence - that the government should maintain the present levels of taxation. Then to everyone’s surprise, when his opponents could find nothing to say to refute him, he tried to refute himself; he argued convincingly that the government in fact should reduce the levels of taxation (thus triggering the class’s laughter). He is a very creative and adaptive young man.
C G participated in the essay contest of RUC and asked me to mentor him. He told me that he was not meant to "take the palm," but to develop his writing skills, and to acquire more life experiences. He also said that when deciding how to make public investments in our rapidly developing economy, figures and statistics could not be a substitute for, but only compliment first-hand, personal experience. He then spent his holiday designing, distributing, collecting and analyzing a questionnaire to complete his report. My judgment is that C G's report made full use of the statistics, and its analysis was logical and effective, and his conclusion and proposals were reasonable. My only critique was that the sample size of 200 should have been closer to 2000 to support his conclusions better.
According to my previous experience at the University of Georgia as a visiting scholar, I believe C G is eminently suitable for study in the US, and very qualified for your program in particular. He not only has great interest and enthusiasm in his field, but displays all the skills needed for excellent economic policy research. Therefore, I recommend C G without reservation.
