Is the word function used to mean an occasion or a celebration like someone's birthday or wedding anniversary?

1) I can't come to the office tomorrow as I have to attend a function.

Does the above sentence sound natural? Also, is using as common in such sentences?

Hi Daemon,

Yes, that sounds all right. A function is often something like a birthday/anniversary but it usually involves a number of people and an arranged catering - it has a touch of formality about it.
