The Collared Dove was thrilled.

Just wait until my husband comes back to the nest she thought, he will be as thrilled as I when he sees that both of our eggs have hatched, and what beautiful babies they both are, although one is far bigger than the other.

Hmm, I wonder how that could have happened?.

Never mind, he'll be back soon, but instead of me getting a nice meal we shall have to share it between this ravenous pair.

In an adjacent tree the Cuckoo looked on, blissfully unaware that he was, once again, the father of a strapping youngster.

Hi Annie, well, a Cuckoo is a lazy bird and rarely builds a nest of its own.

It prefers to lay an egg in other bird's nests and lets them raise its young.

Baby Cuckoos grow very quickly and are always hungry. They will throw the genuine eggs, or babies belonging to the real parent, out of the nest so that they alone are fed.

Very often the young Cuckoo is bigger than the parents who are feeding it.

Nature is wonderful, but sometimes, unknowingly, very cruel.
