Hi,

I often get confused by the usage of was and were, particularly when they are used with "if" as in:

She drove the car as if it were her own. Would I still be right if I said, she drove the car as if it was her own?

What about:

I wouldn't be angered by that if I were you vs I wouldn't be angered by that if I was you?

'Was' is OK in informal English, but is not acceptable in written work and on language proficiency tests.
