more britt idiom please #136 (permalink) Mon Feb 14, 2011 18:23 pm   more britt idiom please

Hi Mr. Townend,
Please give me more about Brittish Idioms. Like "started to have kittens" and "brainwave". I think American idioms are rather easy to be guessed what they mean, but Britt idioms are more difficult.
In history, is it true that an american perfected british english word into an american english, and made the first english dictionary in Amerca (I don't remember the person' name is).
Is it true that american english is better than british english?

That is questionable. American idioms can be tough to guess too.
And no doubt there are British idioms that are easy to guess.

Moreover, a great many idioms exist both in British and American English and mean the exact same thing.

No, you can't really say that one is better than the other.
It largely depends on the reason why you're learning English - if you're planning to converse with the British then learn British English, if you're planning to converse with Americans then your choice should fall on American English.

Hi Valentino Bangun,

The idea that one type of English (American or British) is better than another type is really quite absurd. English is English and can and has been adapted, modified, enhanced and developed in many different ways. Attempting to grade the different types is futile.

Thank you dear Alan for your good stories. I enjoy them all. but i have difficulty understanding the meaning of some phrases at times.
Could you please clarify the meaning of the following phrases?
1-Christmas cards first LAUNCHED AROUND THE time Dickens was writing
2- the most TREASURED events
3-those weeks LEADING UP to the play
4- in a FLASH of INSPIRATION he said

Thank you in advance for your excellent detailed answers.

Hi,

Here are my explanations:

1 'Launched around' means started for the first time when Dickens was writing.
2 'Treasured' means valued very highly.
3 'Leading up to' means happening before and continuing to the time of the play.
4 'A flash of inspiration' is a sudden and very good idea that comes into your head.

Hope that helps.

Alan

Generally, use:
at to refer to a point.
in for an enclosed space or for a length of time.
on for a surface.
Though there are some exceptions where their use is accepted to be interchangeable.

Here's are some previous threads about use of 'at' or 'in':
