Dear Alan, I cannot understand this phrase "that our Edward had his wife incarcerated (imprisoned) on the grounds of insanity -- hers, that is." I read your essay and smiled by myself regularly. Thanks for your Christmast gift. |

Hi,
'A traditional happy ending' - this means that 'The Christmas Carol' ends as all good stories with a happy ending because Scrooge changes from being mean to being generous,. The 'moral' in the story is like a lesson because it teaches us that money doesn't necessarily bring us happiness and that's something our bankers should learn when they get these 'bonuses' (extra money) for their work.

Hi,
We learn that Edward has his wife put into prison because she was mad (insane). He says that she was insane and that he wasn't.

My name is Ha. I come from Vietnam, a small beautiful country in Southwestern Asia. I have some phrases in your second essay that I cannot figure out. - " who valued his judgment on his writting" Wihichperson does "who" , the first " his" and the second "his", Knebworth or Dickens. - Does "put on plays" mean " set up plays"? - " get everyone up on stage" means " Dickens gave amateur artists a professional role on stage" or " he wrote stories about everyone"? - What does " Dickensia" mean? - I cannot find the word " tightfisted" in Oxford Dict., can you explain ? - Who was Cratcht who appeared at the ending ofth essay? - And the last question, Can you express more clearly the meaning of the last sentence"So we have a traditional happy ending and also a moral, which today we might direct towards all those bankers with their annual bonuses!" I will read your essay regularly for enjoyment and improving my English. Thank you for your time and effort. - |

Hi Ha,
I have answered your questions in bold letters:
| Quote: |
My name is Ha. I come from Vietnam, a small beautiful country in Southwestern Asia. I have some phrases in your second essay that I cannot figure out. - " who valued his judgment on his writing" Which Person does "who" , the first " his" and the second "his", Knebworth or Dickens.('who' refers to Dickens. First 'his' refers to Lytton and the second to Dickens)
- Does "put on plays" mean " set up plays"? Yes. - " get everyone up on stage" means " Dickens gave amateur artists a professional role on stage" or " he wrote stories about everyone"? (This means he tried to get everyone to take part in the plays.)- What does " Dickensia" mean? (The word is 'Dickensian' and describes everything to do with Dickens)- I cannot find the word " tightfisted" in Oxford Dict., can you explain ? (This means you don't want to spend your money.)- Who was Cratchet who appeared at the ending of the essay? (Bob Cratchit is the clerk who works for Scrooge) - And the last question, Can you express more clearly the meaning of the last sentence"So we have a traditional happy ending and also a moral, which today we might direct towards all those bankers with their annual bonuses!" (This means that this is a typical happy ending for a story and it is also a lesson for today's bankers who only think of money) I will read your essay regularly for enjoyment and improving my English. Thank you for your time and effort. |

dear alan this is part of my article: can you help me to check grammar of sentence: thanks alot
Pathogenicity Test Pathogenicity of M. phaseolina isolates was evaluated on common bean, Line D81083. For inoculums preparation, rice seeds were soaked in water for 1 hour, transferred to glass bottles, autoclaved two-time with 24 hour interval, inoculated with 2-cm- diameter plug and incubated for two weeks and then dried in temperature 45 for three days, crushed and weighted 6 gram per isolates. Inoculum was evenly mixed with 3 cm surface soil of 10centimeter pots. Seeds were sterilized with 2% sodium hypochlorite for 2 min and then rinsed in sterile tap water and planted 5 seed per pot. In the control treatment, sterilized rice powder was used. After 70 days, some indexes such as shoot wet weight, shoot dry weight, root wet weight, root dry weight, plant height, chlorosed leaf percent, defoliated leafs percent and root volume (key 1-4 defined) were recorded. Index damage percent was calculated with adding chlorosed leafs and defoliated leafs. |

Hi,
Many of the words are new to me and so I can't really comment on their correctness.
I would only suggest corrections to the following: 'on common bean' = on the common bean/ 'two-times' = twice/ 'in temperature 45' = at a temperature of/ 'weighted' = weighed/'5 seed' = 5 seeds/'with adding' = by adding. The plural of 'leaf' is 'leaves'.

Thank you for the story, Alan! I really liked it, especially the way you wrote about your taking part in the performance. And I'm thinking... of putting up a new play with my students. Anyway, it is always fun! :D |
