Usually, advertisements are only 15 seconds long, during which the advertisers have to express their ideas and advocate the product. For me, it could be called contemporary art, and due to the different cultural backgrounds, advertising contains more information apart from the product itself.
The comparison between advertisements advocating the same products vary from country to country. Through comparison, audiences can grasp some ideas under which kind of circumstance the viewer would like the product, and purchase it. For example, most advertisements would have a story in China. Sometimes about daily life and others maybe about romance. In comparison, the advertisements that I saw in the United States are much more direct compared to China's. They simply described the product, and introduced the benefits after using or eating it, which is sort of unacceptable to me. And for me, as a Chinese, I do not have any impulsiveness to purchase the product after watching this kind of advertisement. It even looks a little bit silly to me.
Those advertising on live television can also indicate the products that interest people these days.
Mountains of information, such as what kind of products are more attractive to viewers, what is commonly needed among the natives and what is one of the most popular products in the country, can also be obtained through watching advertisements. These still have many differences among different countries.
Koreans may be attracted by the newly invented cheap watermelon, whilst the Chinese are more interested in the profitable stock-market software. French viewers may focus on the fashion materials and trends. On the other hand, Germany may pay more attention to the newest, most precise machinery.
This kind of information about attitudes in different countries can all be inferred from the advertisement playing on TV.
To sum up, what the advert tells is not limited to the product itself. There are quantities of other information contained in it which varies from country to country. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yet another interesting essay. My compliments. (25)
