In the office, how to use the tense properly? #1 (permalink) Thu Nov 12, 2009 4:17 am   In the office, how to use the tense properly?

my boss: Dr. Alex(not in the same office)
my roommate:Dr. Tom( in the same office)

today I ask Tom if or not Dr.Alex is in the office, I should say:

Did Dr.Alex come?
Does Dr.Alex come?
Has Dr.Alex come?

which one is correct and what's the difference between them?

and he should answer:

He comes.
He came.
He has came

or
He didnot come
He hasnot come
He isnot coming
which one is right?

In English, we do not use the title with the first name. If a person's full name is 'Robert Smith', we refer to him as 'Mr Smith' or 'Dr Smith' when we are being formal, and to 'Robert' or 'Bob' when we are being informal.

A: Has Alex come in yet?
B1: Yes, he has.
B2: No, he hasn't.

But why not - Does Dr.Alex come?

Is acceptable to use this one?

Hi Tanya,

If you asked the question: Does Dr.Alex come? the question is not complete but you could be asking if he comes on a regular basis. You would then ask: Does Dr Alex come here on Tuesdays/very often/sometimes/often and so on.

Because it's present simple tense?

But what is it - "Has Dr.Alex come?"

Hi,

can I use would with the verb chosen. In a very layman language I want to ask - Can we place third form of verb with the word would.

Or is there a rule in grammar that follows a standard. As in the case of Does and Did we usually place only first form of verb.

I would appreciate if you could tell a bit about this.

respect and regards,

Andy
