A dog is reputed to be man's best friend, and I would certainly be the last person to argue with that statement.
Many owners idolise their pets, but unfortunately for the pet, kindness can sometimes bring about the downfall in the dog.
The basic requirements for a happy dog are; food, exercise, grooming, and more exercise.
A dog needs at least forty minutes of brisk walking every day, even longer if you have the time. If you cannot walk briskly, then free the dog from the leash and throw a ball, or use any means that you can think of to encourage him to run.
Some people will jog with the dog if they themselves are fit enough, whilst others will ride a bicycle with the dog's leash fastened to the rear of the bicycle seat.
When you return home make sure to dry your dog thoroughly. A damp coat leads to early rheumatics in your animal.
I always take a stiff dog brush with me on our twice-daily walks, and I use the open-air to help blow away the free hair while I am brushing them.
Remember to ALWAYS have a good supply of clean fresh water available for your dogs. Do not overfeed your dogs. Over-kindness leads to illness and lethargy.
Temper your love of your dog with authority. Dogs always seek a leader. Ensure that you are the leader. Make sure that your dog never pulls you forward. Make it walk beside or behind you. You should be in charge of your animal at all times.
Take this responsibility very seriously! Love your animal, but be the BOSS.
