Meaning of "Letter of intent"

Hi, what exactly is a letter of intent? I've checked the web for definitions but there are so many of them and now I'm rather confused.

It is "a written statement expressing the intention of the undersigned to enter into a formal agreement, especially a business arrangement or transaction."

It is a written promise to sign a contract of some kind, to make periodic investments, to buy a certain quantity of product, to donate or sponsor or subsidize; in other words, any letter expressing an intention to take (or forgo) some action.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for keeping an eye (or probably two eyes?) on the spam squad. We simply remove them every day and they will come back. Spam indicates that the economy in certain parts of the world is taking off. They soon will change their way of advertising when they realize that spam is a waste of time and energy...

For some reason this thread seems to be a favorite for "spam" posts and poor Torsten has to keep deleting them.

I think you probably know that "spam" is the same a "junk mail" or "unwanted E-mail from peolple or companies you don't know". Those nasty "spammers" also mangage to put their "spam" in forums. Don't ask me how they do it. I have no idea.

When I wrote "Spam Alert" I was simply alerting Torsten that the thread had been "spammed" again.
