Hi,

Could you help me understand the following sentence?

Quote:
"You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.

1. Does the 1st underlined part mean seven males and their females of every clean animal?

2. I feel the 2nd part should mean each pair of every unclean animal. If so, why two?

3. The 3rd part would mean seven males and their females of birds of the air. Why male and female here without 'a' as in the 1st and 2nd parts?

Thank you.

Hi Philin,

1 You are correct.

2 Two of each unclean species of animal, one male and one female - a male and a female to keep the species alive.

3 Seven pairs of each species of bird. It could have said 'a male and a female' (of each species). It's written in rather old fashioned English but this is what it means.
