ETLS topic: About traditional culture #1 (permalink) Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:17 am   ETLS topic: About traditional culture

As the development of modern science and technology, some aspects of traditional culture are being lost, so some people think that the traditional culture and technology will be replaced by the modern science and technology such as computer or internet, what is your opinion?

Recently there is a drastic dispute about whether or not we should keep the traditional culture and technology as the rapid development of modern science and technology. Here I will focus on Chinese situation. With the respect of Chinese traditional culture, I have to differ on this matter that all the traditional culture and technology should be replaced entirely.

Basically, I am not saying that we should preserve all the traditional culture and technology. There are some traditional culture should be annihilated, which are defined as discriminations and shackles exactly in China. To illustrate, in some poor region the girls’ feet must be bound before they grow up, which makes inestimable damage to their body and spirit, resulting from patriarchal society’s abnormal desire. Meanwhile, some old industry technology should be replaced due to low efficiency and harmful impact on our environment. For instance, we could adopt new technology for paper-making industry that was considered contamination resource

On the other side, to keep cultural diversity, we could preserve the profound Chinese traditional culture and technology. For example, while Chinese people enjoy the warm greeting for Merry Christmas, the ethnic Chinese person should get together with families in Spring festival and Lantern festival, thereby promoting Chinese peaceful home concept. Recently Chinese traditional medical treatments are welcome in western society, taking acupuncture, cupping, and massage for example. In a word, computer and new technology could not replace the traditional techniques that are carrying the harmony concept, despite we could use new stuff to improve the system and efficiency.

To conclude, we could forfeit the old style traditional culture and technology that are not suitable for modern society. By contrast, the culture and technology that inherit human being’s merit should be promoted without the identification of old or modern.
