Grammar question. Past Tenses. #1 (permalink) Thu Nov 19, 2009 13:54 pm   Grammar question. Past Tenses.

Hi dear teachers,

Could somebody help me to realize my confusion. If you have seen a movie and was discribing it to your friend what sequence of tenses would you use?

...'She begged him to have a lunch with her father' or
...'She begged him to had a lunch with her father' or
...'She had begged him to had a lunch..'?

(If you have just a declarative goal)

Best regards.

Thank you Jagadish.g, but why? Could you give me some another examples or maybe rules. As of now, I see that if you have an infinitive you shouldn't transform it.

'She begged him to have lunch'
'He taught them how to play soccer'
and so on..

Am I right? =)

- "To had" is impossible.

- The choice is between "she begged him to have lunch with her father" and "she had begged him to have lunch with her father"; both could be correct depending on context.

- Just "begged" is standard; if you want to present the begging as clearly happening before something else, you would use "had begged". "Begged" is most common.
