Hello Shannon, Nice to meet you. So you have taught English for 11 years and you don't teach anymore now? I'd like to know your experience as ESL teacher. I learn English just for fun but I don't have many opportunities to speak or to write that's why I try to get in touch with somebody this way. By the way I'm April and I live in Belgium. I hope to hear more from you. Bye for now see you again soon. |

Hello again!
Wow, so many questions! It is nice to meet everyone here. Sorry, Nurzhan, but I am not a girl! Shannon can be used for both males and females. April, I am still a teacher! For everyone who is interested, I offer tutoring online (at a very reasonable price!). But to answer your question, I taught Spanish at the university level part-time for seven years, and ESL at the middle school level for 11 years full-time. Most of that time, I taught here in my home country (USA), but for the last three years, I taught in Mexico, and was the principal in charge of English programs the last two years. I decided to pursue another dream a few months ago, so I returned home to the USA to be closer to my family (including my baby nephew, who is now almost 5 months old), and started a language school. I already have several students I tutor online, so things are going well so far!
I am happy to respond to everyone who emails me, whether you want to be a new student or not!
Warmest regards, Shannon |

Hello, Alkattaa!
Nice to meet you. I agree with the teachers that have asked you to "listen a lot and read books a lot." What they are trying to say is to immerse yourself in the language with lots of "comprehensible input." However, I also understand your situation of having very limited time to dedicate to study.
There really isn't a magic and easy way to quickly acquire a language. Despite different strategies, approaches, and language exchanges, nothing can beat dedication and commitment.
I would recommend finding movies, music, and texts (such as magazines) that are interesting to you. If you have a book on 17th century English poetry, and that bores you...you will not learn English with that book! On the other hand, if you love riding motorcycles, you should browse the internet and find TV shows or magazines that deal with that topic. You will activate what is known as "prior knowledge" in your own language, and make the connection with the new vocabulary in English.
An old-fashioned, but successful way for many students is to find vocabulary words and sentences structures that are unfamiliar to you. You can underline them in your magazine, or copy them from subtitles or expressions you hear in music or on television. Then, guess the meaning from context. Check the definition in a dictionary. Create flashcards to help you remember the words. Try making sentences with the new vocabulary, and check your structure by doing searches on Google or Yahoo.
I also recommend finding a language exchange partner or an online tutor to help you, even if it is only two times a month for 30 minutes. The more you practice all skill areas (oral and written), the more your English will improve.
Warmest regards,
Shannon Cole shannoncole@coleinstitute.com |

As this section is for introducing ourselves, it would be better not to post specific language-learning questions here (otherwise the thread will get too long!). You can either send me a private message or post your comments in the other categories in the forum. If you would like to contact me personally regarding lessons or are seeking specific advice, you can do that by emailing me: shannoncole@coleinstitute.com
See you soon! Shannon |
