Martha was almost eighty, and the years weighed heavily on her shoulders. She suffered from dementia at a time before it had been medically accepted as a mental illness. She talked to herself quite a lot, and the only people who paid her any heed were the young children who lived in her street, and a few of the older people who had known her for years and knew that she had really once been a very active and gregarious woman.
Now she lived alone in a house too far passed its time for vital renovation. The landlord had let things run into a state of shameful neglect, and he was rarely seen. His only interest was in collecting the rent that the property brought.
The roof leaked into the bedroom, and there were several buckets and cans placed around the small bedroom where she slept. The kitchen tap continually dripped, and the outside toilet-cistern gently overflowed into a nearby drain. The wind whistled through the ill-fitting windows and doors throughout the property, and the outside doors had long lost their true colour. They were heavily coated with a thick cheap varnish that the Summer's sun had blistered until they looked like the skin of a leprous corpse.
Martha had no family members, and all of her friends were now dead. She sat alone in the firelight and had conversations with her long-dead husband. Unaware of the time of day she often went to bed at noon and arose at midnight to go shopping. She was unable to understand why the corner shop was closed, and she would return home talking to herself all of the while. Eventually her plight was drawn to the attention of the local authority and they finally got around to visiting her. It was decided that she would be placed in a sanatorium the next day.
That very night a great storm descended on the town and the rain was torrential. The ceiling of Martha's bedroom collapsed under the weight of water that it could no longer support, and it fell forcibly upon her sleeping form. It continued to rain for the whole night. The next day when the sanatorium transport arrived to collect her, Martha was found dead in her sodden bed. Of course the landlord was shocked, and he feigned surprise at the poor state of the property, and the truth was well hidden.
The house was boarded up and it stayed so for many months before the council finally demolished it. Of course the landlord was well compensated for his loss.

Good Evening! The Landlord's interest was in collecting the rent that the property brought.Martha was found dead in her bed, after that great storm, therefore the house was messy and a bit destroyed from some parts, the landlord was compensated for his boss. So,the theme of the story is like 'Help needy people, and never be selfish or else you will lose'. The resolution was so saddening, that she died, because of the storm,in fact, she was lonely and has dementia. But no one took heed! |

Hello Luby. :-)) The landlord completely ignored the plight of the old lady. It was his responsibility to keep the property in a good state of repair, which he failed to do, and yet he was richly compensated when the house was finally demolished.
He was selfish, but he didn't lose. Only Martha lost... her life.
