Competency Based Approach

Throughout decades scholars are trying to suggest an ideal approach for teaching English as a foreign language. But each time they found something lacking, that’s why we find a lot of approaches and methods to teach a second language. The « Competency Based Approach » is among the latest methods of 21st century ; it’s a Canadian approach which based on « the competency » in learning. Scholars say competency itself is a function of three core components : « attitude (behaviour), skills, and knowledge ». If astudent takes only one core component and ignores the other, he cannnot be seen to have satisfactory mastered the competency. Shirly Williams says in the subject : « a teaching staff engaged in a module fostering thecompetency of ‘Planning and Design’ will have to make explicit not just a knowledge of the principles of design, but also how these translate into the skills required for design and the necessary attitudes such as accuracy, quality and so on. »
To conclude this brief outlines of « Competency Baed Approach » , we can say that there’s no space in this approach for the idea of the ideal teacher who is considered as a fountain of knowledge, by contrast the learner is the centre of the learning process. When the approach is applied correctly the students will be their own best teachers ; and based on that they’ll acquire the spirit of innovation.

I hope you have succeeded in the exam of teachers…

Competency based approach is a very interesting lesson I had had two years ago (Idont know if the conjugation is correct!). I appreciate your text, only, I can’t agree with you when you write that the teacher is considered as a fountain of knowledge, because in the active learning teacher is not a root of knowledge but a mediator between learners and knowledge.

Good luck Awatef

HI, Atfa
I don't say that the teacher is a fountain of knowledge in the new and effective methods. I mean, the old method in the Algerian syllabus considers the teacher a fountain of knowledge. But the new syllabus which adopts the CBA, it considers the learner the centre of the learning process.
