Let's say a guy keeps flirting with a girl no matter how much she tries to resist him. :)
Guy: I think I want to call you. Tell me your number and I'll remember it. Girl: Nooo. I told you last time I had a boyfriend! :) Guy: Really? That's very interesting. You know I had two bottles of chapaigne at home. :) Girl: Oh my. You never give up do you? xD Guy: Of course [I do] not [give up]! [This flirting] wouldn't be the same [as it is now] if I [gave up making importunate passes], would it? (The boy wants to express: Yes, I know I am being pushy; but that is part of the game of flirting; and in a way you like this kind of flirtation, don't you?) Girl: (laughing) No, I suppose [it would] not [be the same as it is now, if you stopped being so pushy]... (The girl coyly agrees with what the boy said; the word "suppose" makes it coy. Her laugh shows that she appreciates the humour in what he said. About the grammar: the girls negative statement "no" echoes the boy's negative statement "wouldn't", so that she agrees with him.)

As usual, you can articulate your explanations in a thorough, yet easy to understand way. I woudn't have figured these out even if I've contemplated the entire day. :D _________________ I quit studying English years ago and have just come back to study the basics. |
