It's almost impossible for me to remember exactly when and where I had first met Roberta. Perhaps at a party, or at the reception of a friends wedding, but today as I stand by her graveside I recall all of the wonderful months that we had spent together. Perhaps there are those who would call it "lust at first sight," but it was never really like that for Roberta and me. We were soul-mates, but only on the platonic level. It was Brian who had spoiled any future that we may have eventually shared.
Brian had met her just after her Father had died, and he had offered a friendly shoulder for her to weep on. One thing led to another and Roberta's fate was sealed. She became pregnant because of a foolish moment with Brian, and because it was the "done thing" in those days, Brian and she were married. He was an abysmal failure as both a husband and as a Father. He squandered what money he earned and pretty soon Roberta had to take a job in a local factory to make ends meet. Her Mother took care of the little boy whilst Roberta worked, even though Brian was again unemployed.
Her earnings were still not enough to keep pace with the debts that Brian was continually adding to with his gambling, smoking and drinking. Roberta was forced to take two jobs, and it was during one Winter that she had contacted pneumonia. She died from this illness and Brian even managed to stay away from his own wife's funeral, feigning his own sickness as an excuse for his absence. Everyone was disgusted at his behaviour except himself. He kept pleading that his illness was genuine. Not one person believed a word that he spoke.
So today I stand before the headstone of my beloved Roberta. A headstone that I paid for. The tears course down my face unashamedly, but tonight will be a time for rejoicing, for tonight Brian will die.
Be assured, Brian will die.
