They came so quickly from out of the darkness that I barely had time to get my hands out of my pockets.
Luckily they didn't attack immediately, relying instead on their numbers to defeat my resistance.
Reasoning with them was going to prove to be a futile exercise.
Instead I struck the biggest of the group with as much force as I was able to muster in my heavily lined Parka.
He went down like a felled ox, and made no attempt to rise again.
The others, momentarily taken aback, simply stood and gaped.

I let loose the lead of Violetta, my normally friendly loving companion, and she, seemingly sensing the danger that surrounded her master, immediately set-about attacking the group.
They scattered like a panicking flock of sheep.
I called her to heel and we set off toward home once again.

Later the next day I had a visit from the Police. Apparently they were investigating a complaint of a group of young men being attacked by a man and his dog.
It appeared that they had approached this man in the hopes of getting a light for their cigarettes, and he had knocked one of their friends to the ground, and then set his dog on the remainder of the group.

When I gave the Police my version of what had occurred they laughed and said they would offer my apologies to the group and that no further action would be taken.

Now I ask myself, had they really only accosted me for a light, or were their true intentions more malevolent?

What do you think?

Hi Bill,

I think it´s hard to decide. In case those young men are violent people they certainly would have been better prepared or do you think they are at a crime apprenticeship and aren´t professional enough to cope with an old-timer lol, no matter whether he is accompanied by a dog?

On the other hand we all have heard of offences by such guys who not even feared to treat their victims to death.

But, why the heck, did they complain then at the police? Have they been only a great flock of silly jesters who can´t cope with the idea that an alledged victim made them run?

Or did they , in fact, just lack some fire for their cigarettes and you helped them with their attempts of quitting smoking?

Really, lots of aspects within that story and provided it actually happened to you last wednesday you should have a certain look on every event around you. However, I think, none can blame you for that immediate response. Even if the assumed traitors have been just peaceful smokers having forgotten to take their lighters with them. Simply , such things can happen and after all just one of them would have been enough to ask you for fire.

Btw, do you smoke?

Michael
