Present Perfect rule: It is incorrect to use the present simple/continous to describe duration.
E.g. - I live in sabadell for eight years (wrong) As you say, wrong. - I'm living here for eight years (wrong) In an unusual context you might use this to describe the immediate future; but it is usually wrong.
But can I use duration in tha past simple/continous? - I lived in sabadell for eight years. (correct?) Yes, but it means that you don't live there anymore. If you still live there, you say "I have lived in Sabadell for eight years". - I was living here for eight years. (correct?) I can't think of a context where this fits in; better not use it. |

Hi Aikuzo,
Another point to make is that one of the characteristics of the Past Continuous (I was living here) is that it is often used as a 'background' tense and in that function it anticipates what happens next or indicates that there will be some kind of interruption. Your sentence:
| Quote: |
| I was living here for eight years |
could be an example of what I am saying but it is, as it were, half finished. You could use it like this: I was living here for eight years before the war broke out or I was living here for eight years when I realised that the climate didn't suit me.

We use 'past perfect' to express something that had finished at the concerned moment while with 'past continuous', we want to tell something that had started but not finished yet. It's just my opinion. I don't remember the rules exactly. |
