"past simple" vs "past perfect" #1 (permalink) Mon Dec 14, 2009 13:55 pm   "past simple" vs "past perfect"

Hello!

Please help me to choose the right tense:

1) A: Did you have a nice chat with Tessa?
B: No, not really. When we ....... (drink) our coffee, she ..... (hurry) off home.

2) A: The shooting was very frightening, I suppose.
B: It certainly was. When we ....... (hear) the shot, we all ...... (throw) ourselves to the floor.

Thanks!

I'll finish them in the following way:
1)When we were drinking our coffee, she hurried off home.
2)When we heard the shot, we all threw ourselves to the floor.
Any other opinions?

Can you please explain me why you've chosen Past Continious in 1), can't it be Past perfect instead? (When we'd drunk our coffee, she hurried off home.)

If you want to use past perfect, your sentence should be"...after we'd had our coffee, she hurried off home "(I think 'had' or finished is better than drunk here). But it doesn't match the previous sentence "No, not really" very much.
