TOEFL essay: Teachers should encourage their students to question everything. #1 (permalink) Tue Dec 15, 2009 9:47 am   TOEFL essay: Teachers should encourage their students to question everything.

I think that it is a duty of teachers to encourage their students to question everything. I believe this because questioning opinions, thoughts or apparent facts brings new ideas and progress to the personality, the society and humanity.

One reason I believe that students should learn to think critically about everything, is that they learn filtering the informations they get through media. Nowadays, we’ve got a mass of input of information from different sources like internet, TV or newspaper. Knowing that the main aim of the media coverage is pretty often to catch customers through polarizing headlines, it’s important to analyze the information carefully.

By teaching the students to question everything, they also might get a scientific way of thinking. To look behind the curtain can bring new ideas and progress. So questioned Copernicus and Galileo in the 16th century the generally accepted opinion that the sun is surrounding the earth and disapproved it. Caused to their discover a new way of thinking was possible and new solutions for problems or questions were found. For example, without this knowledge the explanation of the seasons wouldn’t be possible.

Another reason I’d like to mention to force my opinion is that questioning everything includes also reflecting the own acting. Wedded with evaluation and changes, this conducts to the development of personality and morality. For instance, I’d like to mention the adjustment of the own actions to the categorical imperative instead of acting with the might of the strongest.

In conclusion, in my view questioning everything brought the humanity were it is today. If we were still acting without thinking and questioning it - in a way just listening to our instincts - there wouldn’t be any social and cultural life and no progress. Thus I agree with the statement that it’s an important duty of teachers to encourage their students to question everything.

Please revise my essay!
Many, many thanks in advance!!! :)

Nowadays, WE HAVE a mass of input of information from different sources like THE Internet, TV or newspaperS. Knowing that the main aim of the media coverage is pretty often to catch customers through polarizing headlines, it’s important to (analyse) the information carefully.

By teaching the students to question everything, they also might ACHIEVE a scientific way of thinking.

To look behind the curtain can bring new ideas and progress, so questioned Copernicus and Galileo in the 16th century.

The generally accepted opinion WAS that the sun WAS surrounding the earth and THEY disapproved it.

BECAUSE OF their discovery a new way of thinking was possible and new solutions for problems or questions WAS found.

For example, without this knowledge the explanation of the seasons would NOT be possible.

Another reason I WOULD like to mention to STRENGTHEN my opinion, is that BY questioning everything includes also reflecting ON ONES own THOUGHTS AND IDEAS.
Wedded with evaluation and changes, this LEADS to the development of ONES personality and morality.

For instance, I WOULD like to mention the adjustment of OUR own actions to the categorical imperative, instead of acting with the might of the strongest.

In conclusion, in my OPINION questioning everything HAS brought humanity TO WHERE it is today. If we were still acting without thinking and questioning it - in a way just listening to our instincts - there WOULD NOT be any social and cultural life and CERTAINLY no progress.

Thus I agree with the statement that IT IS an important duty of teachers to encourage their students to question everything.
