What does "dress" mean in this sentence?

I usually wear a nice dress shirt-, but nothing too formal.

Hi Fair,

dress shirt = a man's shirt (white with a starch front) for evening wear (usually with tuxedo) = evening shirt.

It means a nice shirt, but not only for evening wear. It would be for formal or semi-formal wear, whether in the daytime or evening. Some people even have to wear dress shirts and ties at their jobs.
