Hello! Can you please rate this essay? Thanks!
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Always telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It's difficult to define whether it's always better to tell the truth or not. From case to case and from relationship to relationship the meaning of 'better' differs a lot. To be more specific, children are punished for lying, but imagine what would happen if suddenly politicians and advertisers begun to tell the truth. It wouldn't be so profitable, would it? That means that every person deep inside knows that telling the truth is the right thing, but our society is built on lies.
In personal relationships though, I think that truth always has to be said. People are usually concerned whether they should tell white-lies or not, in order not to hurt their friends. We are afraid that that telling the truth, which indeed is only our personal opinion and not a 'Universal Truth', might hurt our friends, although the most important is the way an opinion is expressed and not its content. For example, you could advise a friend in a really gentle and carrying way to stop smoking, and explain to him how damaging is this habit for his health.
Another reason for always telling the truth is that lies lies don't live long. What consequences truth hiding can have on those who we are trying to protect should be considered very seriously. If a person had an accident and won't be able to walk again, no one has the right to tell him: 'Oh, you'll be fine in a few months!', because expecting this to happen and that day actually never coming can gradually lead to depression and to denial of the life as it is. Eventually it hurts more to find yourself been deceived.
To conclude, I believe that it's impossible to avoid some lies, but in personal relationships one of the most important things is telling the truth, and it's worth trying no matter how difficult it appears to be some times.
