Hi,

I hope I haven't interrupted you in the middle of it and I also hope that you have stopped for the day. What am I talking about? I'm referring to work and I'd like to use that 4 letter word to give you some examples of how we describe it in English.

Hi Alan,

I'm not Jack and I'm not a dull person either. But I work ... in fact I work pretty hard. I enjoyed going through your letter and thought of replying right away as it's the work of a moment. I wish I could write more but I'm a bit snowed under right now.

Cheers!

Dear Alan,
I really appreciate your essays that you sent me occasionally and it made me impressed. By reading the essay you sent recently, I got many idiomatic expression as well as metaphors and figure of speech. It is very important to know for a second language learner like me.

Hi Lee,

A metaphor is a figure of speech. It is an extension of a simile. When you make a comparison ( a simile), you say for example: The wind made a noise like a wolf howling. If you say The wind howled, then 'howled' is used as a metaphor.

A pun is often a play on words that sound similar. You call the glass in a window, a 'pane'. You call an ache, a 'pain'. Both words sound the same. You could make a pun and say: The glass in my window has broken. It's a real pain!

An idiom describes a general expression like: Take it easy, which means 'Relax'.

Hi Alan,

I'm up to my eyes in my work indeed, but I try to find every single opportunity to read your essays. I think I'll soon stop burning midnight oil and say some warm words to my friends on the Forum.

Regards,

Yuri

Dear Alan,
I liked the way you wrote this essay especially the metaphors. Your essays are always valuable. However, this is the most wonderful, for it is a figurative one. In this way, I would like to comment on this essay and to contribute to little story about myself. When I was in Somalia I had a friend who used to be so busy just like Harry. He used to complaint about his job by relating all his illness to this work. I think he was stung by the same bug'
One day, I came across my friend in a restaurant. Unfortunately, he did not talk to me ; he was in hot water. Just few minutes after I left him, was informed that he got fire; he was completely sacked from his job for being late.
