These are wrong (I have fixed the last one):

We will be late(adj) for dinner.
Who ate the most(adv)?
This is a most(adj) interesting book.
She sings real(adv) well(adv).

Good morning Mr. Micawber.

Would you please be so kind as to explain further why they are wrong, as I too am unsure of their incorrect use.

Kitos.

A late person is usually dead; I think 'late' is a sentential adverb.
'The' is a determiner, which precedes nouns.
'Interesting' is an adjective.

Distinguish between adjective and adverb... #6 (permalink) Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:23 am   Distinguish between adjective and adverb...

Hi Mister Micawber,

Regarding “We will be late(adj) for dinner.”, let us simplify it to “We will be late.” or even “We are late”.
To me, I always consider the part of speech of “late” in the sentence “We are late.” as an adjective since it qualifies the pronoun “We”.
Could you please further explain why the word “late” is an adverb and which word it is modifying ?

Thanks a lot,

Nick

I just feel that way. I realize that 'be' is a linking verb and is followed by a predicate adjective or a noun, but 'late me' sounds odd to me-- like I died.
