Both cases indicate 32 soldiers (not officers), by any normal military measure-- platoons are very small units. To me, the 9 non-commissioned officers in both cases may or may not be part of the 32 (I am not that knowledgeable on the military unit structure). 'With' subordinates the phrase that follows it, while 'and' is a coordinate conjunction, but I don't think it makes a difference to the body count here. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |
