Difference between "with" and "and" #1 (permalink) Sun Jan 17, 2010 14:52 pm   Difference between "with" and "and"

Dear teachers,

I am not sure if I am wrong, but my guess to cases 1 and 2 are that
there are 40 officers respectively.

Case 1:
In each company, there are 4 platoons. A platoon comprises 32 officers with 1 senior sergeant and 8 sergeants.

Case 2:
In each company, there are 4 platoons. A platoon comprises 32 officers and 1 senior sergeant and 8 sergeants.

In case 2, it uses the conjunction "and" instead of "with".
Could you tell me the difference in meaning between cases 1 and 2 please, teachers?

Thank you.

Kitty.

Both cases indicate 32 soldiers (not officers), by any normal military measure-- platoons are very small units. To me, the 9 non-commissioned officers in both cases may or may not be part of the 32 (I am not that knowledgeable on the military unit structure). 'With' subordinates the phrase that follows it, while 'and' is a coordinate conjunction, but I don't think it makes a difference to the body count here.
