among vs. between #1 (permalink) Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:42 am   among vs. between

Hi all,

I understand that using "between" for 2 objects and "among" when referring to more than 2.

But please have a look the follow sentence:
Quote:
WTO is an intergovernmental organization responsible for implementing and enforcing international rules regulating trade between nations.

Is it the case of the number of objects could be 2 or more then we should use "between"? Is it acceptable to use "among" here?

Thanks for your time,

Yes it's because the trade they facilitate is generally between two nations, even though they want all nations to trade with each other.

Wow... it's a good point that I just happen to know! It's a little bit difficult for me to adapt to my first language since there is not much different between "between" and "among" in speaking/written forms.

There are separate terms for "bilateral" treaty and "multilateral" treaty.

Anyway, thank you very much for your response.
