Hi Teachers

Could you please tell me what is the meaning of "It defeats" in the following sentece?

It's obvious that external hard disks aren't feasibly used with mobile computers, especially for hand-held computing devices. It defeats the entire purpose of having those devices.

Thank you very much

Mark

My opinion:
defeat (in here) = ruin, destroy, infect, fail, to make upset

Hi Mark,

My opinion again:
It defeats = It fails (ok)
the entire purpose = the purpose of inventing the mobile computers
having those devices = having mobile computers or hand-held computing devices

oh, I think I had made a mistake,

"having those devices" should be "having mobile computers or hand-held computing devices", right?
