Ever noticed that some guys like pick on Asians online? Once you reveal yourself as Asian, they start acting like a prick, pointing out each spelling mistake you make.

The irony is that some of these guys are barely literate.

Hi Blue113,
I am an Asian too, actually one those unpopular ones! I am Iranian! I don't know whom are you pointing at, but as far as I know, most the people here are trying to act friendly. They are trying to help each other to learn better. As for me, I am a rookie in English language, but most of the times I am trying to represent my opinions in response to people's questions or essays. Firstly because, it helps me to know about my mistakes and misunderstandings, and also it may helps others by opening the new aspects and perspectives in looking at the same subject. You know, I maybe weak in this language, but at least I am trying hard to learn it by every useful way that I know.
For you my friend, I think it's not proper to think this way, because we are all helping each other not hating.

I was actually referring to other forums, not this one. No, I wasn't talking about someone who is learning English. I was talking about someone whose L1 is English but is Asian in origin.

Some people from a certain race seem to have a hard time accepting that an Asian can write better English than them. I think an Australian or British Chinese probably would have experienced such racism.

I probably shouldn't be typing such things in this forum..which is mostly made up of English learners. Mixmixi, one day when you are very fluent in English and decide to move to an English speaking Country, you will understand what I mean.

Hi Blue113,

I'm German and I lived in the USA for a time. My hair is blond, my skin as white as a glass of milk, and my eyes round. I, too, was corrected when I made a mistake. And I was glad for it! The same goes for the Internet. No matter who you are, and no matter which country you go to, you will always come across friendly people as well as unfriendly ones. Although I don't consider being corrected for a mistake an unfriendly act.

Claudia, as I have explained in my previous post, I was talking about Asians whose L1 is English and not English learners.

It is not about friendly people correcting your mistakes and helping you learn English.

It is more of racist idiots eyeballing you when you speak in your accent. Or racist bigots being deliberately pedantic and nit picking on every word you type online.

Blue113,

then I must tell you that you have indeed posted this topic on the wrong forum, because all you will find here are English learners, not Asians whose first language is English.

Kind regards,

Claudia

Hi Blue,

I have had to face racism sometimes, but it wasn't because of my language levels (English & Italian). Racism does exist in several places, it's a sad fact. But every time I was corrected for a mistake, I was grateful and of course I have never thought that it had to do with racism. In fact, I often asked people around to correct me when I talked with them. When it happened (rarely) that someone laughed at me for how I spoke, I didn't feel miserable though : as Claudia said, there are bad and good people everywhere you go, so it's not a big deal. Ignorant people often consider themselves the best, it's an old story.

Now it rarely happens that people correct me, especially when I speak Italian. Sometimes they even tell me "You speak better than us !", but I know that it's just a nice way to show respect. You will hardly ever be able to speak a foreign language as well as your mother tounge.

It seems a bit strange to me that people of Asian origin are racist toward people of their same "race" for their English. I believe that English is an important language but you can not classify a person, laugh at him and say how (less) important he is just basing on his English level.

Huong.
