Hi:)

I wonder if there's someone who knows the explanation of such issue - if there is any at all:)

Why in articles, when it's mentioned the age of the people, below 10 years old it's written as a word and above 10 years old - as a number.
Example:

Quote:
The official said that earlier this year a trained nurse asked to drop off her 18-month-old daughter and two-year-old son at an orphanage so she could take up a contract in Ireland for a few months.

And so it is also under the pictures e.g.: From left: Maria (12), Tom (four).

That all depends on which style manual the editors are using. Some style guides call for almost all numbers to be spelled out.

The Associated Press style guide -- at least the last time I worked with it daily -- called for numbers under 10 to be spelled out, and numbers over 10 to be written as numerals. However, the exception was that all ages be written as numerals.

Some editors know the rule, but not the exception. So, as far as I remember, the person who wrote the quote you gave would be wrong according to the AP style manual.

Note also that in English it is not correct to start a sentence with a numeral. You either have to spell the number out, or you have to reword the sentence.

Wow, that suprised me, beacause the quotasion is from the Daily Mail (www.dailymail.co.uk) and I thought that it would be correct there.

It may be correct according to the style manual that the Daily Mail uses. There is no one unified style in English, as there probably is in Polish. All of the manuals differ a little.
