'Clear up this question'
Correct:
1. No, because by the time I got there all the tickets had already been sold. 2. Yes, and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. 3. Yes, but my seat was behind a pole so I could barely see anything. 4. No, but I am hoping to see it tonight. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

2. Yes, and it was one of the best shows I had ever seen.
Why do you think the above sentence is incorrect, MM? _________________ Non-native speaker of English

Because the speaker will probably see more shows in the future, Daemon-- so we would use present perfect, not past perfect. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

There was this show about human relationships that was aired on XYZ channel when I was a teenager. It was one of the best shows I had ever seen. And I guess there were lot more shows after that on that subject and some of them were even better.
Can you please tell me if the usage of past perfect is incorrect in the above context? _________________ Non-native speaker of English

It is odd and/or incorrect as it stands-- it depends on another, later past event somewhere in the greater context, which you have not given us. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Hello Mr. Michawber, Why did you say "No, but I am hoping to see it tonight." instead of "No, but I hope to see it tonight."? Why did you use the progressive form in such a verb?

The progressive shows more enthusiasm. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |
