Oh how I yearn to feel again The road beneath my feet. To see again places my eyes know well, And the people that I'd meet. They'd pass me in their shiny cars, And toot their horns aloud, So I would take the lonely road, Avoiding irksome crowds.
I'd run alone, unfettered, free. The breeze alone accompanied me. I'd feel my heart, how sound it felt And in this way I'd test myself Forever trying to be faster Always courting with disaster. The miles flew past, I loved each one, I their father, they my sons. I loved them as one does a child, Always tender, always mild.
And then fate called and played its part, I felt a fluttering of my heart. I knew then well that the end was nigh, I started walking, with a sigh. I faced reality; I'm done, As I walked into the evening sun. No more the joy of fluid grace, 'Twas all replaced by saddened face. My time was over, finished, done, Today had been my final run.
